 | Pompey Community Church, located in the hamlet of Pompey Hill, is constructing a new, bigger building on the Route 20 and Berwyn Road. Town Supervisor Carole Marsh said she met with church representatives who are interested about what can be done with the old church. Marsh said they set up a committee to brainstorm about possible uses. The last church built in the town of Pompey was over 100 years ago. Easter Sunday, 2009, is the projected date for the completion of Pompey Community Church's new home and first worship service. If you have wondered what the new building looks like on the inside wonder no more. There will be an open house on Sunday, November 23, beginning at noon. Come and see the progress made so far and share in the excitement. Everyone is invited. The 175 year old congregation of what is now called PompeyCommunityChurch will dedicate its new building at the intersection of Route 20 and Berwyn Road on Sunday, September 13, 2009. The event is called “Building A Legacy Celebration” to celebrate the successful capital campaign and building program entitled “Building a Legacy: Honoring the Past, Embracing the Present, Building for the Future”. Under the leadership of Pastor Wendell Pfohl the congregation has grown from 30 to 250 over the last 7 years. A worship/farewell ceremony will start at 9:30 am in the former church, building on Academy Street, to honor the legacy and memories of the past 175 years. In attendance, will be several members of the church who have attended for 40, 50, even 60 years. Following this service there will be a walking processional with 250 people who will travel from the building on Academy Street, across Route 20, and into the new building on Berwyn Road. At 11:00 a.m. there will be a worship service in the 342 seat sanctuary of the new building on Berwyn Road. Songs of praise, testimonies and a message from Pastor Pfohl will be included in the service. The sanctuary is the centerpiece of the beautiful new building which is 16,000 square feet , has 8 classrooms, a full-sized kitchen and a large Gymnasium. The construction of the building included hundreds of volunteer hours by members of the congregation. There will be an open house starting at 1:00 p.m. where guests, local officials, construction crews and church members will join Pastor Pfohl in dedicating the new building. Following the dedication there will be refreshments, tours of the building, and activities for children. All are welcome; please come and join us! | Good Monday morning friends We are just having too much fun ...that’s all there is to it. Friday night the Kellish Hill Players rallied for the cause and we went to play at the Pompey Historical Center for their Strawberry Social. We were honored to be asked this year. In years past Diamond Someday , Ray Randall and his band , Irish Sessions have graced their facility. It was our time to show our talent and say hey come on up the road and join the fun. So many thanks to Bob D. who was our leader of the group . So much effort on his part to make us shine and it worked... Our music group consisted of Dave. F., Bob D., Greg H., Linda W., Joanne B., Eileen R., and myself. The audience appreciated our period costumes that accompanied our music of certain eras. Myself I am very drawn to the Civil War times and my music selections reflected that. Everyone showed off their talents to delight the audience. The strawberry shortcake topped off the social as well. Larry H. and Maria P., were there taking pictures go on facebook and see the many great pictures they took of the day. Then we all hurried back to our 3 band concert. Driftwood, John Cadley and the Lost Boys and Atlantic Flyway ..The concert was fantastic and everyone was high on the music. Driftwood is from Binghamton area and I hope they liked us and come back soon. The after jam was going till almost 1:30 am ? I don't know I had to go to bed around 11:30 , the eyes could not focus towards the end of the night. Thank you music family for a great night..... :>)... Linda W. had her Songwriting monthly get together Sunday morning and new faces came to participate . Enjoyed the time. Lets just say the music at the Sunday jam yesterday was first class all the way. It was more like a performance than a jam, the bar was raised.. :>). Loved it..... Terry and Bill from Folkstrings were here, Thom R., Bob S.,Tork, Dave F., and many regulars graced our place. | | | | Report on County Legislature | | |
 | Report From the County Legislature, 12th District This year the County Legislature is charged with the task of reformulating the sales tax distribution for Onondaga County, specifically the three percent of the four percent retained by the County. Under the current formula, which was established in 2000, 25.9% goes to the City of Syracuse, 29.7% to the towns and villages, 6.8% to the school districts and the balance of 37.6% is retained by the County. It is important to note that most counties retain approximately 60% of the sales tax collected. There is a different formula for the other 1% collected, which will be adjusted in 2011. Sales tax, and the 4% which the County collects is considered a county tax and Onondaga County shares it in larger proportion than most any other county in the state. The City of Syracuse has a right of preemption if an agreement cannot be reached which would entitle them to ½ of the sales tax collected in the City of Syracuse. If that were to happen, then the towns and the villages within the towns, who share based on assessed value of the villages, would receive ½ of the amount collected outside the city. The balance of ½ of the sales tax collected in the county and the city would be retained by county government. Schools have no authority to impose sales tax and Onondaga County is one of only five counties in the state that share sales tax with the local districts. The sharing with the school districts is based on school attendance. All of the towns in Onondaga County, with the exception of one, use the sales tax to offset the tax levy for county expenses. All of the villages with the exception of the village of Fabius use sale tax as a part of their operating expenses as do the schools. Onondaga County faces a possible 50 million dollar budget gap for the year 2011 and the Legislature will be taking a hard look at the distribution formula, while at the same time taking into account the affect that any change in the current formula will have on other local governments in the County. Currently I chair the Charter Review Committee which is reviewing the Onondaga County Charter, the governing document of the County. We’re looking at changing how a vacancy is filled should one occur in the Legislature. Currently such a vacancy is filled by an appointment by the County Executive and we are considering whether or not a special election would be an improvement depending on when a vacancy occurs in the Legislature. The charter committee is also looking at changing the fiscal year to coincide with New York State’s so that we can be more accurate in preparing our budget. Lastly, we are also looking at a proposal to downsize the County Legislature from its current 19 districts to possibly 17. Last year and on veterans’ issue we approved a Cold War Veterans Exemption for Onondaga County. We are looking to upgrade that exemption based on new state legislation. You can check with your local assessor to see whether or not you would qualify. If you wish to contact me, my phone number is 683-5655 and my email address is rdemore@cnymail.com.
