New Church Building Planned
|
 |
 |
Pompey Community Church, located in the hamlet of Pompey Hill, is constructing a new, bigger building on the Route 20 and Berwyn Road. Town Supervisor Carole Marsh said she met with church representatives who are interested about what can be done with the old church. Marsh said they set up a committee to brainstorm about possible uses.
The last church built in the town of Pompey was over 100 years ago. Easter Sunday, 2009, is the projected date for the completion of Pompey Community Church's new home and first worship service. If you have wondered what the new building looks like on the inside wonder no more. There will be an open house on Sunday, November 23, beginning at noon. Come and see the progress made so far and share in the excitement. Everyone is invited.

Pompey Hill, NY.
The 175 year old congregation of what is now called PompeyCommunityChurch will dedicate its new building at the intersection of Route 20 and Berwyn Road on Sunday, September 13, 2009. The event is called “Building A Legacy Celebration” to celebrate the successful capital campaign and building program entitled “Building a Legacy: Honoring the Past, Embracing the Present, Building for the Future”.
Under the leadership of Pastor Wendell Pfohl the congregation has grown from 30 to 250
over the last 7 years. A worship/farewell ceremony will start at 9:30 am in the former church, building on Academy Street, to honor the legacy and memories of the past 175 years. In attendance, will be several members of the church who have attended for 40, 50, even 60 years.
Following this service there will be a walking processional with 250 people who will
travel from the building on Academy Street, across Route 20, and into the new building on Berwyn Road. At 11:00 a.m. there will be a worship service in the 342 seat sanctuary of the new building on Berwyn Road. Songs of praise, testimonies and a message from Pastor Pfohl will be included in the service. The sanctuary is the centerpiece of the beautiful new building which is 16,000 square feet , has 8 classrooms, a full-sized kitchen and a large Gymnasium. The construction of the building included hundreds of volunteer hours by members of the congregation. There will be an open house starting at 1:00 p.m. where guests, local officials, construction crews and church members will join Pastor Pfohl in dedicating the new building. Following the dedication there will be refreshments, tours of the building, and activities for children.

Planting a tree – or ten – is one of the best things you can do for the environment. And it’s good for your personal bottom line as well. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, reduce soil erosion and provide food and habitat for wildlife. They provide shade and reduce air conditioning costs in summer, and they serve as a windbreak to reduce heating costs in winter. Studies have also shown that trees add to the value of residential properties.
The Onondaga County Soil & Water Conservation District is a local governmental subdivision established in 1944 under state law to carry out programs for the conservation, use and development of soil, water, forest and related resources in Onondaga County. OCSWCD provides assessment, technical assistance, planning and design services on a variety of water quality and natural resource issues to municipalities, government agencies, farmers, and urban and rural landowners.

Report on County Legislature
|
 |

Report From the County Legislature, 12th District
At the time of this report, the County Legislature and the County Executive’s Office are in the process of working on the 2010 County budget. Like many residents of Onondaga County, County Government is facing a difficult financial year because of the downturn in the economy, especially the loss in sales tax revenue.
The County Executive has proposed a budget which calls for many cuts and which will no doubt impact many county workers and also county services. As we work through the process, I’m confident that we’ll come out with the best possible budget for our residents.
On a different matter, I’m pleased to announce that the project on Pompey Hollow Road, which I mentioned in an earlier report concerning Limestone Creek, is going ahead at this time.
In a joint collaboration between Onondaga County and the Town of Pompey, the Onondaga County Department of Soil and Water is working to reduce the flooding in that area and bring the creek back within its boundaries.
Many homes were in danger of flooding and also a great deal of farm land was being washed away.
The County Legislature at the end of summer passed a new local law which provides a Cold War Veterans Exemption for real property taxes. This covers those who served in the military from 1945 to 1991 and who are not otherwise covered by existing veteran’s exemptions. The first fiscal year that this exemption will be in place is 2011.
Also, the County Legislature in cooperation with the other agencies is working on a new discount card for Veterans which will allow discounts with participating venders. This program will be announced shortly.
If you wish to contact me, my phone number is 683-5655 and my email address is rdemore@cnymail.com.
Hoping that you and your family have a great fall, I remain
Yours truly,
Bob DeMore
